Today we will not look at an expensive smartphone and say that it is the best in its class. We will do this with a more budget option. So, meet - Lenovo A6000.

Equipment

It would definitely be worthwhile to stand out here with something extraordinary and unusual, because budget versions of smartphones are bought more often than more expensive ones, and an extra pleasant surprise from the manufacturer would be a good help for the purchase.

Here we have a simple cardboard box, opening which we will see the author of the review in person, all in beautiful films telling about the capabilities and features of the device. Behind a cardboard partition in a pocket there are instructions for first use and a warranty card, below are the rest of the standard “gifts” for the buyer: a MicroUSB cable, a charging adapter, headphones.

As special “gifts,” Lenovo generously provided a protective case made of transparent plastic and a protective film. It seems like little things, but it’s nice because you don’t have to look for them and buy them yourself.

However, in our copy the cover was made a little crookedly and constantly bent, so it was not possible to put it on and fix it on all edges. Perfectionists would not like this state of affairs. In the photo below you can clearly see that the left edge is not in place.

And if we talk about all the disadvantages of the package, then here’s another fact: this smartphone came into our hands completely new, that is, upon receipt we cut off the factory seals on the box. Taking it out for the first time and turning it in our hands, we discovered several noticeable scratches on one of the ends of the case. We don’t know how they ended up there, so if you decide to purchase this smartphone and they give it to you in a sealed box, don’t be lazy to open it and check the case in the store.

Appearance

As I said earlier, we have a standard smartphone in an all-in-one form factor. I won’t talk about all the delights of this solution, but will go straight to a review of the device in a circle.

In front we have a five-inch screen with a resolution of 720p (1280 x 720) with a pixel density of 294 ppi. The screen, I must say, was a great success. Pixels are practically invisible. The brightness is adjusted by a light sensor, so that in sunny weather the readability of the screen is good. The viewing angles turned out to be at an excellent level, thanks to the IPS matrix.

Of course, the screen size will not allow you to fully enjoy watching TV series, but videos from Youtube look great. So you can safely give the screen a five.

At the bottom there are touch buttons standard for all Lenovo smartphones: open applications/functions, home, step back. When you press the leftmost button once, you will be asked to set up wallpaper and shortcuts on your desktops, and when you press it for a long time, a menu of open applications will appear, which you can close at your discretion. The middle button takes you back to the Home screen from any app, but holding it down opens Google Now. The far right one only takes a step back and does not contain other hidden functions. Unfortunately, these buttons are not illuminated in any way, so at first you will have to press them blindly. On top there is a camera, speaker and proximity/light sensor. The latter, by the way, is a luxury for this price segment. There's nothing else interesting from the front, so let's take a look at the device from the back.

Here we have an 8 megapixel camera eye and an LED flash, and two stereo speakers at the bottom. The back cover is made of plastic and has a soft touch coating. Thanks to this, the smartphone does not slip in your hand and is pleasant to hold.

To install a SIM card or memory card, you will have to remove the cover, and at the same time the battery hidden under it. Unfortunately, there is no “hot” replacement of a memory card or SIM card, so each time you have to turn off the smartphone and remove the battery.

The lid is quite sluggish, so if you drop the phone on something hard, it will certainly fly off first, and the battery will probably follow. You can immediately see (not much, but still) savings in design and low cost in manufacturing.

There is nothing on the left side, but on the right there is a volume rocker and a lock button. At the top there is a microUSB input for connecting to a PC or charging and a 3.5 mm audio jack for connecting headphones, and at the bottom there is only one microphone.

Proprietary interface

Despite all the characteristics, it does not work smoothly out of the box as we would like. This is due to the huge amount of pre-installed software, which immediately takes up 65-70% of RAM.

Separately, I would like to highlight the antivirus, which Lenovo simply called Security.

For me personally, the use of antivirus software on smartphones is very questionable, since only you are responsible for the applications that you install. And installing everything in a row, thinking that the antivirus will protect you in any case, is the same as driving a motorcycle at 200 km/h with full confidence that if something happens, the helmet will save you, although you can simply go slower.

If you are going to install games or programs not from the Play Market, then most likely you will not be able to do this. He will not allow you to install the .apk installation files, no matter how much you convince him otherwise. Classically, in Android settings there is a checkbox so that you can install applications from third-party sources, but here it is not there. The antivirus decides for everything here, according to one principle known to it. For example, for the test I tried to install Real Racing 3, as you know, you need to download the game cache for it and unzip it into the Android folder. So, the antivirus allowed me to download the archive, but did not allow me to extract it to this folder. The same thing happened with the Monument Valley puzzle, which didn't even need a cache. In general, its operation is more frustrating and interferes with the full use of the device than it helps. Of course, it can be unloaded from memory, it will swear and warn about the consequences, but will still close (you are the admin, not him!), but after 3 minutes it automatically returns, eating up almost 150 MB from the RAM. But the climax of working with it is that this is a trial version of the antivirus, and to use it fully, you will have to pay money. Hand face!

And where have you seen this, so that the antivirus itself decides which application you can install and which not?

Also, branded file sharing applications ShareIt, a synchronization program, etc. are constantly trying to open. They also offer to pay money to unlock their full potential.

The situation is the same with pre-installed Yandex services. Some of them are constantly hanging in memory and are not going to be unloaded from there. There is one small difference: the application package from Yandex does not require money for its work, which is good news. As a result, out of 1 gigabyte of RAM, at best, you have access to about 300 megabytes.

Unfortunately, things are no better with built-in memory. There is a total of 8 GB here, of which 2 are already occupied by something unknown. 6 GB left. Next, you download maps for full use of the Yandex Maps/Traffic and so on service - minus another 1 GB. Then you decide to play the pre-installed Ashpalt 8, it will offer you to download game data - minus another 1.5 GB. The situation is corrected by a memory card, but such spontaneous filling of the RAM and internal memory is a little annoying.

Let's go through the interface: over 20 pages are available to you on the desktop. By the way, I almost forgot to note that there is no menu as such, but all its elements have been moved to the desktops. So, if you force them well with widgets and icons, then you are guaranteed to slow down when scrolling. This is largely due to the clogged memory and the rather weak Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 processor, with a frequency of 1200 MHz, but it copes with most games with virtually no heating, and this is pleasing.

Separately about the sound. The main feature of this smartphone is support for Dolby Digital technology. This technology extends to both watching movies and listening to music. At its core, it is improving sound quality through software presets. In fact, it is a very dubious thing. You see, this feature can only be used from the proprietary application. As for music, everything is sad: the application cannot read lossless music formats, and it makes minor changes to mp3. If we talk about video, then support for surround sound is announced. To be honest, I didn’t hear any sound even with professional headphones, not to mention those that come with the kit. In addition, the application is not unloaded from memory and even if it is closed forcibly, it is still loaded automatically. Surprisingly, it does not work in other applications, such as third-party audio players. But the interface of the program itself leaves much to be desired: kinetic scrolling slows down, and the direct power button works about the fifth time.

Cameras

Regarding the cameras, everything here is in the best traditions of budget smartphones: 8 Megapixels with autofocus. An inexperienced user does not need more. It takes quite high-quality pictures; in good lighting, the colors are rich and bright. The HDR mode adds color and sharpness, while the weight of the photo, of course, increases, but their quality noticeably improves. Very often the built-in LED flash saves the situation, but in the dark, with or without it, the camera shoots at C grade.

As for the front camera, you shouldn't expect much from 2 megapixels. Selfies are obtained with auto-retouching, because it lacks clarity; also, with improved lighting, the quality of the photo increases. Already in average lighting, noise appears, which spoils the whole impression. Again, what do you expect from 2 megapixels?

The only obvious disadvantage is the lack of an oleophobic coating. The screen is very easily soiled, all traces of touches remain on it.

Let's start in order.

It is worth noting that the included headphones do not convey the proper music sound quality that a smartphone provides. I strongly recommend using some of your own third-party headphones to listen to music - in the test we used Audio Technica and Philips that we had previously tested.
4. What does Dolby offer us? Firstly, these are presets for movies/music/games and voices that differ from each other. You can create different profiles and customize them to your taste. Secondly, this is the Dolby Digital Plus sound enhancement function, which significantly improves sound quality, which cannot but please even the most inveterate music lovers. And thirdly, this is the sound quality of the speakers: despite their not the best location, it is worth noting that the sound is indeed better and louder than that of most smartphones, but in my opinion it does not reach truly high-quality sound.
5. The speaker did not disappoint, the sound is clear and distinct, without interference.

Summarizing all of the above, we can say that Dolby Digital Plus and two speakers do not elevate a smartphone to the title of a multimedia device; even for this money, you can find better devices in this regard on the market.

Connection

The Lenovo A6000 supports two microSIM cards. There is only one radio module, so one of the cards will be the main one, while the second will be in “standby” mode. One of the cards works in all modes including LTE, the second - only in 2G mode.

Supports 2G, 3G, 4G and LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0.

GPS/GLONASS is used as a navigator. A “cold” start takes just under a minute, and A-GPS reduces search time to a few seconds.

Battery

The smartphone received a removable battery with a capacity of 2300 mAh.
The included power supply will charge the smartphone in about two hours.

The device lasted almost 9 hours in our test at 50% brightness level. All this time the backlight, browser and Wi-Fi worked.

That is, the battery capacity should easily be enough for a day without recharging for moderate use, and a special energy-saving mode guarantees the use of the smartphone for several days.

Camera

Lenovo A6000 is equipped with two cameras: a main 8 MP and a front 2 MP. The main camera, among other things, has autofocus and an LED flash.

The camera interface is simple and intuitive. In the settings you can find different modes/filters/effects, etc.

Photos taken with the main camera are of average quality. Even in daylight, noise, color rendering problems and blurring are noticeable.

Photos taken indoors and in the dark seemed no better to us.
The 2 MP front camera is enough for video chats and inconspicuous selfies.

The funniest thing is, of course, that the case that comes with the device produces artifacts in the photo when using the flash. A similar problem is observed with the A7000, a review of which will follow this one. How it was possible to allow such a failure with the accessory included in the kit is unclear.

Let's sum it up

Lenovo A6000 is a good smartphone with a set of good characteristics, however, it seems to me that the device does not meet the stated multimedia capabilities. Of course, the smartphone has other sides - support for two SIM cards and LTE, two speakers and a good price with autonomy completely offset the mediocre camera and the quality of these same speakers.
